A student-led media experiment that turned an English classroom at a Chennai government school into a miniature newsroom has now earned national recognition. The Classroom TV initiative at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar, was selected for presentation at the National Council of Educational Research and Training's National Seminar on Innovative Educational Practices. The seminar showcases innovative teaching practices from schools and teacher education institutions across India. This year, just 31 educational innovations from across the country were selected for presentation following evaluation by a panel of NCERT experts. Among the educators selected was R. Hemalatha, B.T. Assistant at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar, who developed the Classroom TV model to help students improve their spoken English through media-based activities. The Chennai Press Club has condemned the alleged threatening and aggressive behaviour of Additional Superintendent of Police (ADSP) Thibu towards journalists in Thoothukudi and urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay to take immediate action against the officer. According to a statement issued by the press club, the incident occurred on July 20 when Vilathikulam MLA Markandeyan, who had been arrested in connection with a case over alleged defamatory remarks against the Chief Minister, was taken to a hospital for a medical examination. The press club alleged that journalists present at the hospital were attempting to seek the MLA's comments as part of their reporting duties when ADSP Thibu, who was deployed on security duty, allegedly threatened them, attempted to assault them and used abusive language.
