By Pradeep Damodaran in Media News on
Compulsions of coalition politics came to the fore as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman read the Union Budget 2024 on Tuesday with Bihar and Andhra Pradesh getting the lion’s share of the budget allocation apart from new schemes to boost employment and some tax relief for the salaried class. Capturing the essence of the budget in their headline, the Hindustan Times lead piece titled “Coalition Economix” went on to summarise the finance minister’s seventh budget as one which “largely steered away from populist announcements, although chunks of the 85-minute budget speech were devoted to schemes and sops aimed at Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, two states governed by allies Janata Dal (United) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) whose support is crucial for the survival of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.” The Times of India report on the budget focused on the government’s push to appease youth in the country besides the NDA allies with employment creation

Today's Ten: Supreme Court stays controversial Kanwar Yatra nameplate order

By Pragadish Kirubakaran in Media News on
The Supreme Court has stayed the UP and Uttarakhand governments’ controversial directive mandating eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners. The apex court has instead ordered that the kind of food served be displayed to Kanwar Yatris. The state government’s insistence on revealing the names of owners had faced backlash for fostering exclusion and discrimination. The Court highlighted petitioners' concerns about identity-based exclusion and emphasised its stance on safeguarding individual rights. While the UP government argues that this move ensures transparency and security during the pilgrimage, one can't help but think it could also be a veiled attempt to impose religious scrutiny. The Times of India's Amit Anand Choudhary explained in his piece that the Supreme Court's stay reflects its commitment to preventing policies that could lead to societal division. Meanwhile, India Today also provided insights into the ongoing legal battles and the
