How to break into broadcasting - Nine’s Bianca Wylie

By Tony Bosworth in Media News on
< >   Nine TV broadcaster and journalist Bianca Wylie - currently covering news for the network in Adelaide - says passion and persistence are key when trying to get a job in her profession.  "It's not about the glamour or the money. It's about passion, hard work, and truth. Those are the foundations of this career." Having faced multiple redundancies when she first started in the industry, Wylie says she  learned early on that success in journalism requires more than just a university degree, and emphasised the crucial role of networking and internships in landing that first job. "I've seen countless people secure positions simply because they were there, interning, making themselves visible to those who make hiring decisions." Wylie recalled her own journey, starting with podcast The Daily Red because when traditional opportunities weren't immediately available, she created her own platform. The podcast eventually evolved into video content, focusing on her passion for

News Corp veteran England takes a break from The Tizer.

By Tony Bosworth in Media News on
Adelaide daily The Advertiser says farewell to long-serving journalist Cameron England after more than 23 years at News Corp, originally on The Messenger free newspapers, before moving to the Tizer where he has been for the last 22 years.  England says he is taking a break before deciding what to do next. He has most recently been Business Editor on the daily, a post he held for nine years, and before that was Business Reporter.   Announcing his sabbatical move on LinkedIn, England said, “After more than 23 years as a journalist with News Corp Australia I’m taking a break for a while. I was fortunate enough to get a great grounding in journalism at The Messenger all those years ago, which stood me in great stead over the years.  “The rules were simple – get it right, be fair, give people a right of reply, and take as much care with a story about your local footy club as with the top end of town.  “I think I mostly got it right, and in the process had the privil

“Act of wild optimism” comes to sad end as InStyle Australia Ed-in-Chief bows out

By Tony Bosworth in Media News on
Justine Cullen. Justine Cullen, Editor-in-Chief of InStyle Australia, has shared a message on Instagram, marking the end of her time at the helm of the title.  “The Autumn print issue (on sale now) will be the last made by me and my team,” said Cullen. In her post, she added, “we relaunched InStyle Australia a little over three years ago as an independent magazine - an act of wild optimism and a real labour of love.  “When it came to print, we created a magazine for readers (a thing that shouldn’t be as unusual as it is). We didn;t syndicate any content from overseas editions, which meant we could craft something intentional, original, and deeply connected to whatever cultural moment we felt our Australian audience was living in.” Cullen was the Editor of Instyle Australia when True North Media Australia re-launched the title in 2022. InStyle began life as an American monthly women's fashion magazine founded in 1994. It was published in the United States by D

Mirror Now signs off as India’s news industry faces a new reckoning

By Abdul Nishad in Media News on
Mirror Now, the English-language channel under the Times Network, aired its final broadcast on May 5, quietly exiting India’s media landscape.  Its abrupt shutdown underscores the mounting pressures faced by news outlets--shrinking ad revenues, algorithmic dependence, changing viewer habits and structural weaknesses in the current media model. “Very sad to hear that my former employer, Mirror Now, has shut down its services. Many of my colleagues lost their jobs overnight,” said Megha Upadhyay, now with ABN News. “Don’t assume journalism is the most secure career… journalism is one of the most unpredictable jobs today you’re in the office, tomorrow you could be out.” The closure follows recent layoffs at ABP News, News Nation, and Zee. For industry watchers, Mirror Now’s end is part of a wider reckoning. “I have always wondered what particular need(s) of the viewers' Mirror Now was meeting uniquely. I think, none,”  Ashish Kaul, strategy consultan
