The United States bombed three nuclear sites in Iran early Sunday morning, bringing itself directly into Israel’s war with Iran and potentially kicking off a more dangerous phase in the conflict.

The attack by US warplanes and submarines followed days of uncertainty about whether President Donald Trump would intervene in the conflict, which began with a surprise attack on Iran by Israel on June 13. Trump said the “strikes were a spectacular military success” and Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities “have been completely and totally obliterated”. “Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace.
