AI and podcasts - promise, limitations, and the future

By Tony Bosworth in Media News on
As artificial intelligence continues to make inroads into numerous industries, its role in journalism has become a topic of hot discussion among media professionals. We spoke to News Corp journalist Stuart Kavanagh for his take on AI’s usefulness in regional journalism. In an Insider interview with Kavanagh he said when it comes to writing stories AI's current capabilities face notable limitations, particularly when it comes to nuanced reporting and interview situations.  "Most good stories live in the gray area, in the nuances, and AI doesn't do nuance," says Kavanagh.  He believes while AI can assist in building stories, it cannot fully replace human journalists, especially in face-to-face interviews and complex narrative development. Major media organisations are developing their own AI systems for editorial use, including Kavanagh’s employer News Corp which has been working on its proprietary AI system, though its implementation on News’ regional news outlets appe

Resilient Australia Forum - Bringing geopolitics and technology together

By Will McLennan in Media News on
InnovationAus.com’s Publisher, Corrie McLeod, said last month’s Resilient Australia forum, “was designed to bring together geopolitics and technology at a time when both of those areas are changing very quickly, and how that impacts the way Australia thinks about its resilience,” McLeod told Influencing.  The forum, jointly hosted by InnovationAus.com and Verizon Business Group, was held on April 14th at the National Press Gallery of Australia and heard from industry leaders on achieving better national resilience, with events hosted by prominent ABC journalist and presenter Hamish McDonald.  “Hamish McDonald did a fireside chat with Robert Le Busque, who runs the Asia Pacific region for Verizon. The idea was to combine Hamish’s geopolitical/social lens perspective with Rob’s business/cybersecurity community perspective,” said McLeod.  “To see both sides come together made for a very intriguing discussion.” For McLeod, seeing McDonald go about his craft on

Power of the press…

Journalist Niki Savva. Pic by Alex Ellinghausen. Thanks to The Age’s CBD duo - Stephen Brook and Kishor Napier-Raman - well known journo Niki Savva has got her identity back, though it hadn’t stopped a false X account posting during the election.  As the latest update from the reporters reveals, after months of trying, CBD succeeded in helping political commentator Savva get her identity back. “Victory!” said Brook and Napier-Raman in The Age in the update this morning.  “After we went public with our column on Wednesday morning, the offending account impersonating Savva on X, @TheNikiSavva, hastily rebadged itself as “obviously a parody account”. Then it temporarily shut down while renaming itself “Lorem Ipsum” and changed its account handle to @nothingtosee697. It also removed its posts imitating the columnist,” said the reporters. As CBD previously reported, during the election, Niki Savva’s kettle “was boiling dry” when normally she would have be

Four Corners gets down to Bunnings

By Tony Bosworth in Media News on
This coming Monday, ABC’s Four Corners focuses on Bunnings with the question, “what if the store Australians trust most is not as benign as it would have us believe?” Four Corners says Bunnings has “quietly become one of Australia’s most dominant and profitable retailers, with rivals saying its market power matches Coles and Woolworths combined”.    “Yet it faces none of the scrutiny of the big two supermarkets.” The program - reporting by business team journos Angus Grigg and Emilia Terson and produced by Elise Potaka - will cover claims from some critics that Bunnings is a, “corporate predator systematically picking off independents, shutting down competition and abusing its dominance with suppliers”.   For its part Bunnings insists it’s just another competitor in a crowded field.   The program digs into what the ABC calls, “Bunnings’ unchecked dominance, its soaring profits, and whether regulators have turned a blind eye while it reshapes Aust

India attacks Pakistan, Operation Sindoor launched

By Pragadish Kirubakaran, Pradeep Damodaran and Neeraja Gopalakrishnan in Media News on
A fortnight after terrorists gunned down 26 civilians in J&K’s Pahalgam, Indian forces struck at terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir early Wednesday. At least nine targets have been hit in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, according to reports. Hot Off the Press The Times of India reported the Indian government statement that stated: "A little while ago, the Indian armed forces launched 'Operation Sindoor', hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed. Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution.” Multiple loud explosions were heard in several places in Pakistan and POK on Wednesday, Reuters reported. After the explosions, power was blacked out in Muzaf

Nine flags radio revenue decline despite digital gains

By Abdul Nishad in Media News on
Nine Entertainment Co. has reported a disappointing third quarter for its radio division, with broadcast advertising revenue dropping in the low double digits, well below expectations. The update was shared as part of CEO Matt Stanton’s presentation at the Macquarie Conference in Sydney. Despite the sluggish performance in radio, Nine saw digital audio revenues climb more than 20 per cent year-on-year, highlighting a shift in listener behaviour and advertiser interest toward digital platforms. The company described its radio results as “weaker than expected,” reflecting broader market challenges facing traditional audio formats. In contrast, other segments of the business are performing strongly. Total television advertising revenue rose nearly 8 per cent, boosted by free-to-air gains and continued growth in BVOD. Digital subscriptions across Nine’s publishing assets climbed 14 per cent in Q3, with improved cost management helping to stabilise earnings. Nine reaffirmed its
