Ryan’s HITS residency focused on Scientific Integrity and Research Misconduct

Freelance Australian science journalist Jackson Ryan’s - who’s on a residency at Germany’s  Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Science - has shared with Influencing what he’s studying and how the program is going.  Ryan said his journalism-in-residency program is focusing on, “issues around scientific integrity and research misconduct”. “I want to look at how the scientific integrity ecosystem functions here in Germany, and be able to compare that to the Australian system,” Ryan told us.  “Just recently, I met with some of the ombudspeople who work here in Germany to resolve misconduct disputes, and this week I’ve been able to connect quite a few different people over here, and get moving on what that project looks like.” Ryan said that while there isn’t an exact, hard-and-fast output, he’s already contacted publications he works with to pitch stories on the topics.  “Now that I've got a goal, I have an issue in mind. India's media sector spans over 1.5 lakh registered publications across 20+ languages, yet its ownership remains tightly concentrated, raising persistent concerns about editorial independence and media diversity. According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s Media and Entertainment Sector Handbook 2024–25, 76 per cent of publications are individually owned. Government ownership stands at just 0.35 per cent, while societies, trusts and partnerships collectively make up less than 6 per cent. Despite this fragmented appearance, the market remains dominated by a handful of large conglomerates. While Prasar Bharati-run public broadcasters like DD News, All India Radio, and Sansad TV were created by merging Rajya Sabha TV and Lok Sabha TV. The channel outperformed competitors including Aaj Tak in average minute audience (AMA) and cumulative reach, particularly during high-stakes coverage such as the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
